I’ve been a Parallels 9 user and was about to upgrade to VMWare Fusion 8 after reading several reviews. In general, however, I hope you’ll agree that your specific configuration isn’t applicable to ~99% of users.

If you’d like us to conduct future tests on your custom Mac Pro (I say “custom” because the Mac Pro you describe in your other comment - 2 x 6-core hyperthreaded 3.33GHz - is not a configuration Apple ever shipped), then please send it to us and we’ll be happy to do the additional testing. Our benchmark tests and results are divided into the sections identified below. We therefore ran select CPU- and GPU-focused tests on a 2013 Mac Pro, and we have those numbers available in their own dedicated section later on. But we were also curious about just how well Fusion and Parallels would perform if given access to clearly “high-end” resources. Now, the next question is, can you run a virtualisation software inside another virtualisation software, which is itself running inside yet another virtualisation software? I think so, in principle, though it’s not something I’ve tried.Part of our goal with this analysis is not to simply determine which virtualization solution is the fastest, we also want to see how they compare to “native” Windows performance on the same hardware. Then, of course, from within VMware ESXi, you could run other operating systems. Just make sure you give ESXi enough RAM and disk space for it to be useful.

Now, you can install and run VMware ESXi, inside Parallels Desktop, on Mac OS X. In there, turn on Enable nested virtualization. Then look under the virtual machine’s Settings, Hardware, CPU & Memory, to find an Advanced Settings. In Parallels Desktop, make sure to choose a virtual machine type for, say, Windows 10.
The option may or may not be available depending on the virtual machine type that is used. Nested virtualisation isn’t enabled by default in Parallels Desktop. My plan was to run VMware ESXi inside Parallels Desktop. On my notebook, which is a Retina MacBook Pro, I have Parallels Desktop installed. I was trying to test out something on VMware’s ESXi hypervisor, and I wanted to just do it on my own notebook, so that I don’t have to bother with the hassle of finding a spare computer. Nested virtualisation needs to be supported and turned on in the lower layer virtualisation software. Can you run one virtualisation software inside another virtualisation software? Yes, you can do that too.Ī feature called Nested Virtualisation allows you to run one virtualisation software within another virtualisation software.
They allow you to try all sorts of operating systems and software on your existing computers, without having to buy additional hardware. Hardware virtualisation solutions are really convenient.
